Sam Bennett: Dent-Bush Machine Costs Lehigh Valley Jobs PDF Print E-mail
CHARLES “CHARLIE” DENT

ALLENTOWN – Democratic congressional candidate Sam Bennett issued the following statement in response to the new nationwide unemployment numbers at a new five-year high (6.1 percent) and 160,000 people who lost their jobs just last month.

“The failed policies of George Bush and Charles Dent have put our economy on the wrong track. Hardworking middle class Pennsylvania families need an immediate $1,000 in their pockets. And we need a new representative in Washington who will work to create jobs here, not send them overseas,” said Sam Bennett, a former small business owner and community leader.

CHARLES “CHARLIE” DENT

As of the end of July, 24,000 residents in the Lehigh Valley were unemployed [1] and one in four residents in Allentown live in poverty. [2] Overall, statewide, about 350,000 Pennsylvanians are without work [3].

“Congressman Dent votes with the Big Washington Lobbyists who are funding his campaign and with George Bush’s failed economic policies, not for working families in the Lehigh Valley,” said Kathryn Seck, Bennett campaign manager. “Dent votes against a full minimum wage increase, against equal pay for equal work, and against employee rights at work. Meanwhile the multi-millionaire corporate executives and their lobbyists in Washington who contribute to Congressman Dent are reaping record profits.” [4]

Dent votes against working families:

  • NO to stopping unfair trade agreements like CAFTA, which trade Pennsylvania jobs for corporate profits. [HR 3045, Vote #443, 7/28/05]
  • NO to helping workers organize and have a voice in their workplace under Employee Free Choice Act.  [HR 800, Vote #118, 3/1/07]
  • NO to fully raising the minimum wage. [HR 5672, Vote #319, 6/27/06]
  • NO to ensuring equal pay for equal work, regardless of religion, race, gender, national origin, age, or disability. [HR 2831, Vote #768, 7/31/07]
  • NO to protect worker pensions from companies that declare bankruptcy . [HR 2831, Vote #768, 7/31/07]

The productivity numbers show that workers are working harder than ever – productivity is up 4.3 percent.  [5]  But, the cost of healthcare, energy, education, gas, and food are pushing inflation to 5.6 percent. [6]  As a result, working families have relatively less income to cover their basic needs.
