Sam Bennett Speaks with Seniors at UAW PDF Print E-mail
ALLENTOWN – Today, crowds of United Auto Worker Retirees gathered at their general meeting to hear Democratic Congressional candidate Sam Bennett share what she’ll do in Congress to help seniors.

“The credit crisis has put our job security and retirement security in jeopardy,” said Bennett.  “Back when it came to privatizing social security, my opponent said he was ‘open’ to the idea.  Just imagine if more folks like him worked in Washington.  Our retirement safety net would be wiped out.”

Bennett spoke about her plan for seniors, which includes protecting worker pensions, securing incomes, and providing tax relief:

  • Protect Pensions – Optional pension plans for all workers, ensure full disclosure of pension investment plans, reform bankruptcy laws, and restrict the employers from reducing benefits
  • Income Security – Preserve social security for next generation and increase funding for home heating assistance.
  • Tax Protection – Eliminate income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000, create savings incentives for those making less than $75,000, and expand Alternative Minimum Tax exemption to protect middle class.

This was Bennett’s second event with seniors just this week.  This past Tuesday, Bennett also met with seniors at a United Steel Workers of America retirees meeting.  At these events, some retired workers are finding out for the first time about Republican Charles Dent’s record of voting against seniors.

Background:

  • Dent says NO to allowing government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for Medicare patients [HR 4, Vote 23, 1/12/07]
  • Dent says NO to re-importing lower priced FDA approved prescription drugs from Canada [HR 3161, Vote 806, 8/2/07]
  • Dent says NO to exempting Alternative Minimum Tax exemption for middle-class [HR 800, Vote 118, 3/1/07]
  • Dent says NO to protect worker pensions from bankruptcy [HR HR 2830, Vote 634, 12/15/05]
  • Dent says he’s “open” to the idea of putting social security money in private risk accounts. [The Intelligencer, Local Reps Tote Party Line on Social Security, 3/3/05]
