Top Ten Better Ways to Use Dent’s Big Oil Money PDF Print E-mail

ALLENTOWN – Republican Congressman Charles Dent has accepted over $75,000 from Big Oil.  Here are just 10 ways that money could have been spent.

$75,000 dollars could buy:

  1. 30,000 LANTA bus tickets for people to get to work
  2. A day of childcare for 2455 working moms
  3. School supplies for 1667 elementary school kids
  4. A full tank of gas for 1,300 people
  5. Body armor for 289 troops in Iraq
  6. Home heating in the winter for 230 elderly people
  7. Health insurance for 25 kids
  8. Food for 300,000 hungry children around the world
  9. Yearly college tuition for 8 low-income kids
  10. Hybrid cars for three families

“What does Congressman Dent buy with his $75,000 in Big Oil money?  Two elections.  Now, he wants one more,” said Kathryn Seck, Sam Bennett’s campaign manager.  “Sam Bennett will not be bought by Big Oil. She’ll vote for the interests of the people of the Lehigh Valley.”

Dent has voted time and again for Big Oil interests:

Voted to give $14 billion in tax breaks to oil and gas companies. [HR 5351, Roll Call Vote # 84, 2/27/08]

Voted against a temporary release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve that historically has reduced gas prices [H.R. 6578, roll call voted #527, 7/24/08]

Voted against requiring oil companies to drill in the 68 million acres where they already have leases before getting more leases. [HR 6251, Roll Call Vote # 469, 06/26/2008]

Voted against ending oil company subsidies in order to invest in renewable energy incentives. [HR 5351, Roll Call Vote # 84, 02/27/2008]

Voted to allow offshore oil and gas drilling along the Outer Continental Shelf in places like New Jersey’s coast. [HR 5386, Roll Call Vote # 164, 05/18/2006]

Voted to shield gasoline additive manufacturers from liability lawsuits concerning contamination of drinking water. [HR 6, Roll Call Vote # 129, 04/21/2005]
