Education for Our Children, and Our Future PDF Print E-mail

Access to quality education has been the ladder into the middle class for generations of Americans, and it must remain so. Our society, our economy, and our culture were built on the shoulders of teachers. America and Pennsylvania need our educational system to be the best in the world. We must respect, nurture, and lift up all modes of education — public, private and home-based — and see that a college degree college becomes what high school became in the last century — available for all.

No matter how good the intentions, No Child Left Behind has been a disaster. It’s not fair to hold a nine-year-old kid responsible for her test scores when George Bush and Charlie Dent refuse to invest the money to improve her education. It’s not fair to hold teachers accountable until government is doing its share.

We have always taken for granted our national leadership in innovation and science. But China now graduates four times as many scientists and engineers as the U.S., and India is right behind. American companies have already made the decision to outsource technical jobs to Asia, knowing that the workforce is, in some instances, better trained and willing to work for a fraction of the pay of American workers.

It is time for our leaders in Washington to provide the kind of support and respect for research and development that will bring economic growth and technological leadership back to our shores.
