Social Security and Medicare: The Core of the American Dream |

We must protect and reaffirm the historic commitments of Social Security and Medicare. There is no place for the false promise of privatization. Social Security and Medicare should continue to be a promise of dignity from one generation to another, not a Wall Street windfall.
The high cost of prescription drugs is making it next to impossible for senior citizens to afford the medical care they need. I am committed to improving the Medicare prescription drug benefit, beginning with requiring the federal government negotiate for lower drug prices with drug companies. I also support changing federal regulations to allow the importation of safe and affordable prescription drugs.
As a country, we should reward those who work hard every day to support themselves and their families, pay taxes, and save for retirement. This idea is the core of the American Dream – if you work hard, and prepare for the future, you will be rewarded.
Employees who participate in retirement plans are living this dream, and employers should encourage this by providing options for setting up and maintaining retirement accounts.
Pension reform is key – in Congress, I will protect workers and their families from Enron-style employers. If employers are able to choose how to invest company money, workers should have that same choice with their personal money.
